Pros: I use this drive for backups once a week or so and it seems reliable so far. Back when external enclosures had their own power supplies, I had one drive go bad. Since they’re all USB powered I haven’t had any problems. I’m a pretty low impact user. I leave this drive at home.
Cons: Didn’t provide me with any winning lottery numbers.
Pros: Light weight/low power
Quite
Reasonably fast
Cons: None
Overall Review: I have a 7 year-old WD Passport running as a SAMBA file server. I needed to upgrade the server hardware and wanted a bit more storage space, but mostly, wanted to do a preemptive replacement before the old HDD showed any signs of end-of-life. I connected this new one to the USB 3.0 port on a laptop-turned-server via a USB 3.0 hub. I do get bursts of USB 3.0 speeds as expected so I’m not at all disappointed with the speed. I think it runs as fast as the laptop will allow through that port. I had no issues re-formatting the drive for Linux ext4 and adding it as a new logical volume group so I can expand in the future. There is nothing “weird” or proprietary about the drive interface that precludes using it with Linux. If the old Passport was any indication of expected life, I think I’m in good shape!
Pros: Tons of storage
Quick transfer speeds
Convenient size
Reputable company
Cons: A tad pricey
Overall Review: With the cable out of the drive this is about the size of a man’s wallet, which makes it very portable. This drive offers plenty of space for backing things up safely, or transferring from one device to another. Great buy!
Pros: -Good price
-Brand reputation
Cons: -Housing is fragile
Overall Review: I have a WD black in my desktop, and I’m impressed by the brand. Great external drive for my purposes. Got it, opened the box, plugged it in, and backed up my files. I have 2 external HDDs for redundancy; this has saved my bum before! I got this to replace a very old Toshiba from 2015. That drive made me very uncomfortable with new and unusual access delays and the like. It was time for it to go, 5 years was plenty to get from that thing.
For me, this WD is perfect because it just sits in my drawer for my regular backups. However, I can’t recommend this drive for a laptop bag or anything. Why? the plastic housing doesn’t instill any confidence. Just pressing the center with my fingers, it easily caves. That’s fine in a drawer, not so fine where it can get bumped often or is more likely to hit the ground! If you want an external drive for on the go, maybe look into one of those durable ones with shock absorbing cases.
Other than that, I can’t say anything is wrong here. This drive works as expected and I hope I can get at least 5 years before I have to replace.
Pros: Easy to set-up and fast
Cons: None
Overall Review: Highly recommend!
Pros: Small and quiet
Cons: Drive failed after 3 months
Overall Review: Avoid at all costs. Not worth it.

Pros: Small footprint, inexpensive, arrived quickly, easy plug-and-play, attractive, doesn’t smell of eggs, hasn’t rusted.
Cons: Got this drive 2 weeks ago. Moved about 300 GB of archive video files over to it. Drive has stayed connected and the computer had not even been rebooted. After 10 days the drive stopped being recognized as being an initialized volume. Still working on recovering the data… will update later, but will not trust this drive to store anything that isn’t backed up in another location.
Overall Review: Not terribly happy at the moment.

Pros: Small.
Lightweight.
Single power/data connection.
Large capacity.
Cons: None.
Overall Review: No excitement here. I selected it from Newegg’s web site. I placed the order and paid for it. They packaged and shipped it. I received it and unpacked it. I plugged it in and it worked. From start to finish, it was a boring text book experience. If you want excitement, take up hang gliding.
