A Fantastic Choice for Home Servers and NAS-es Alike9/22/2014 8:30:11 PM

Pros: It’s about time I had a much more efficient solution to backups and storage other than an old PC with a 500GB hard drive in it. My first “NAS” was nowhere the quality I needed, so when I started a new build for this purpose, I was pumped to get to put some WD Reds in it. 4 TB of potential space provides so much more functionality!

What’s really strange is that since I had never thought about running a serious personal backup server, I didn’t even know what to start with for software or hardware specs. I know I needed space, but I didn’t really know what else I would want. Here are the features I wanted out of my server, and the components are listed in Other Thoughts:
    – Low power consumption
    – Very limited noise, since I live in an apartment and will hear a loud computer anywhere in it
    – Compact design without compromising internal peripheral space
    – Platter drives have enough speed to host *effective* virtual machines

I’m definitely pleased with power consumption in the build. PCPartPicker rates the build at 193W required, though I typically see 65 W when idle. Even with 6-8 VMs running from these drives (and there is definitely drive activity), it’s enough to not come close to taxing my PSU. Under typical load, I see no more than 98W. Just for comparison’s sake, the old home server idles at 128W and is ~155W when under light load. Saying that I’m incredibly pleased with the power consumption would be an understatement for sure. To also touch on noise, I can’t hear these drives except when I am right next to the PC. I can now sit in my living room and not know when the drives spin up. I also know this build is already saving me money on my power bill too.

Now onto speed. I have owned WD Blues and Greens in the past, and from a bit of digging, WD has been offering the Red series since 2012, which is a year later from when I had purchased my last hard drive (WD Green, coincidentally). My experience with Greens is that they are too slow, and my experience with Blues is that they’re not enough into power saving or performance. These experiences are dated, but now with the Reds I have, I have a much more positive experience in both areas, and I’d be much more willing to give WD Blues and Greens another chance. The Reds perform fantastic! I get 150MB/s copying to and from a separate internal drive, and 70MB/s copying to and from an external USB 3.0 drive.

Cons: Be sure to have enough SATA cables around, as the drives I received didn’t have cables. This isn’t a huge gripe though, as many drives now don’t come with cables. Besides, this is listed as a “bare drive.” Maybe it’d just be nice to get more SATA cables!

The drives could be quieter, but this is an extremely minor complaint. To expect the drives to be silent is pretty unreasonable, especially given the other performance requirements I have.

Overall Review: Overall, the Red Pro is a near-perfect balance of power and energy efficiency. I’m so excited to have a working storage solution. I will not term it a NAS proper, since I needed a few additional features outside of just storage. However, I am hopefully taking full advantage of the features of my Red Pros. I very highly recommend these drives for a home server, and I’m very curious to how they would perform outside their purpose in a non-server build. 5 eggs for sure!

    The build:
    AMD A8-6600K 3.9GHz quad-core processor
ASRock FM2A88ITX+ Mini ITX FM2+ motherboard
    2x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DD3-1600 RAM
    Samsung 840 series 250GB SSD
2x Western Digital Red Pro 2TB 7200RPM HDD
Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced Mini ITX Tower case
Antec EarthWatts Green 380W 80+ Bronze Certified PSU

I had 2 drives for this review, and they were configured as a spanned volume in Windows 7 pro. This is by no means an ideal (or permanent) configuration for these drives, and it is very possible that these drives have even more potential in a pure NAS setting. However, I needed these as part of a home server, and they perform excellent in this situation.

    Eggxpert Review
A NAS Drive for the Modern Era9/20/2014 1:06:02 PM

Pros: * The Western Digital Red Pro 2TB NAS Hard Drives (we were sent two) are reliable as the WD brand implies. I’ve used only WD for my personal needs for years, because their brand carries a tradition of durability, reliability and prestige. Buying this drive is essentially investing in assurance—for your NAS, server, or RAID setup. *

    – A product such as this is difficult to review. Covering bells and whistles, features, and speed is a reviewer’s natural response; however, this is a much harder task to fulfill when reviewing something as intangible as a hard drive. I’ll provide RAID and single drive performance benchmarks in Other Thoughts. Nonetheless, the real test of drives like these is if they quite simply work reliably. There are advanced technical aspects I could cover that professional reviews explain on other sites, but in the end, all you gain is knowledge that doesn’t substantiate into something tangible. Although I couldn’t spend a year to see if this drive makes it through the paces, I can say that it does indeed work and fulfils its purpose as a NAS, server, or business 24/7 use storage solution.

    – Unlike typical hard drives, the Red Pro’s firmware is designed around 24/7 operations; hence their purpose as NAS hard drives. Just recently in my own NAS, a hard drive broke. It was an ordinary HDD, not meant for my year of around-the-clock use. If I had had a WD Red Pro in there—as I do now—that unfortunate event would likely not have transpired. The WD Red Pro has a 5-year warranty, speaking to WD’s confidence against what just occurred to me.

    – Because the WD Pros are NAS drives, they’re more than suitable for RAID configurations. Unless you intend on using the drive for a single drive NAS, like within a router for example, these drive excel in multi-drive environments. If you do not know what RAID is, and don’t intend to do what I mentioned, I wouldn’t recommend investing in this HDD; instead, you may be looking for a desktop drive like WD’s Black, Green or Blue HDDs. The Red Pro will reliably fulfill common RAID setups (e.g. 0, 1, and 5).

    – Over its previous generation (WD Red), which I have owned and used, the Pro now features Advanced Power Management. Again, it’s an intangible feature, which I’m trying to avoid mentioning, but it’s worth pointing out. Extended Power Conditions, except for substantial read/write speed increases and firmware upgrades, are other improvements over the last generation of Red drives.

    – Even though not intended to be record breaking, the Pro’s Read and Write speeds are impressive for a NAS drive. Included in Other Thoughts are the benchmarks I ran in both RAID 0 and single drive configurations. If you don’t want to wade through lines of compiled data, here’s a succinct synopsis of the speed tests. With a single drive on Atto Disk Benchmark, 2GB Total Length, past 8KB, it consistently scored mid to higher 155MB/s, and within the range of 155.49MB/s to 157.32MB/s.

Cons: – One con I could find was the HDD’s occasional noise output. My NAS is not ideally positioned; nevertheless, during seek, sometimes the drive’s spinning became rather noisy and even noticeably rickety. I’m not sure if this is typical for the drive, but acoustic information on other reviews did back up my observation with an average of 34 dBA, which is higher than most drives.

Overall Review: * Since all of our networks vary and are unique, which in turn adds in too many variables for consistent benchmarks, I only performed benchmarks on drives connected directly to a 6GB/s motherboard port. *

    Excellent enterprise solution.9/16/2014 1:35:42 PM

Pros: Testing in RAID1, sequential reads are peaking at 160 MB/s, which is quite impressive, averaging 100 MB/s for file copies. It’s significantly faster than all of my other drives in both random access time and bandwidth (12.1ms and 0.322 MB/s @ 4K).

Initialization was much faster than previous drives as well. WD has done everything right with these drives from what I can tell. I can only hope reliability is as top-notch as the drive’s performance, and I know WD has the best customer service among HDD manufacturers as well.

This drive has a 5 year warranty, not 3 years as specified incorrectly on some websites. Each drive comes individually wrapped (and padded) in its own box, which was a pleasant surprise after seeing so many OEM’s over the years.

    Cons: None.

Overall Review: Since this is a NAS device, I’m not going to list this as a Con or punish the score over it, but seeks are considerably louder than other consumer-level drives I’ve tested.

WD Red Pro 2 TB review9/14/2014 2:02:38 PM

Pros: Good Price, Great Performance, 5 year warranty

    Cons: None

Overall Review: The WD Red Pro is meant for 8-16 bay NAS systems, I tested them using a Synology DS214play NAS. These drives have better performance than the WD Red drives thanks to their 7200 RPM speed vs 5400 RPM of the non pro version.

Performance on these drives are very good, I tested multiple aspects like HD video playback, file copy, computer backups, and content creation like photo editing using Lightroom. The DS214play supports both CIFS and iSCSI and I tested both. It should be noted that both drives were setup in a RAID-1 volume and any file copying was done from an SSD to eliminate any bottlenecks on the host PC side.

HD Video Playback, I streamed H.264 content from a shared folder over a gigabit connection to a PLEX server. I was able to get an average of 84.6 MBps during playback

File Copy to NAS, copying files to the share was extremely fast. Using a 4.2 GB ISO file I was able to average 101 MBps copying from an SSD to a share on the volume using CIFS. File copying from the NAS was excellent as well and I was able to achieve 66.3 MBps copying to a SSD drive

Computer backups, copying to the drives it was able to average 97.6 MBps while restoring files was able to average 92.47 MBps

For iSCSI testing I created a 200 GB iSCSI target and mapped it on a Windows VM, the VM itself was running off of an SSD to minimize any performance issues. File copying to the iSCSI drive averaged 85.32 MBps and copying from the drive averaged 53.21 MBps

Setting up the NAS was relatively fast, 2TB single disk initialization took 1h 33m and expanding to two drives and RAID-1 finished in 9h 45m

I was impressed with the WD Red Pro, it has a great balance of performance, power consumption, and acoustics. The price may seem high but given the 5 year warranty is actually very good.

    Excellent performance9/12/2014 4:20:18 PM

Pros: Excellent performance for a rotating disk, 3 year warranty.

Hard drives have become increasingly unreliable in recent years, I lose a couple of drives a year, in fact I had a drive failure yesterday (another brand, not Western Digital). I’m hoping that the three year warranty signals that WD thinks this is a more reliable drive than competing drives which come with one year warranties. I have no way of testing for long term reliablity so I can’t say anything definitive about these drives.

Newegg sent me a pair of Western Digital drives to test for this review. I put them into an iCore7 system with SATA3 ports running a Redhat Enterprise Linux 6.5 clone (Scientific Linux 6.5). Before formatting the disks I ran badblocks (the Linux disk reliablity test) on both drives simultaneously. It took a little over 9 hours for badblocks to test the drives. Both drives passed without errors. The temperature of the disks (according to their SMART status) only rose approximately 4 degrees C above their idle temperature which is an excellent number. I ran the destructive (i.e write followed by read) test, the command is below.

    badblocks -b 65536 -c 1024 -t 0xAA553366 -w -v -s $1

After badblocks I configured the two drives as RAID0 (striped) and formatted them with the EXT4 file system. I then ran sys_basher (the Linux hardware diagnostic and benchmarking tool) to test the performance of the drives. The sys_basher command is

    sys_basher -d -th 1 >& log &

Where -d specifies the disk tests and -th 1 specifies that the test run single threaded.

In the RAID0 configuration I saw a low read bandwidth of 34 MB/sec for tiny files (4K words) to a maximum of 245MBytes/second for 256K word files. The write bandwidth ranged from 24MBytes/second (for 4K file) to 479MBytes/second for 4 Megabyte files.

As a comparison I also ran sys_basher on a 4GByte Hybrid drive from another manufacturer. These numbers are for a single drive so they should be doubled when comparing them to the pair of Western Digital Red drives in the previous table. As you can see the performance of the competing drive is less than half of the Western Digital drives. The latency numbers in this table should be divided by two when comparing them to the Western Digital RAID0 pair. Even so the latencies of the hybrid drive are much longer (shorter is good, longer is bad).

The tables are in the Other Thoughts section.

Excellent Desktop Drive and good NAS drive9/21/2014 9:04:14 PM

Pros: Packaging was the most impressive I have ever seen from a hard drive maker. Most times drives come in air wrap or nothing at all. The use of foam was a nice touch that foreshadowed the quality of the drives.

64 MD Cache, allowing the drive to surpass most other drives.

Initialization of the drive was surprisingly fast compared to my other WD HDD.
Tested the drives in a RAID0 setup to maximize desktop testing results. Average read speed came in at 141 MB’s per second, while write speeds were at 111 MB’s per second.

NAS setup results were less impressive, as would be expected. Average read speed came in at 69 MB’s per second while the average write speed was 32 MB’s per second on a file that was 312 MB’s.

Video play back from the drive turned in 89 MB’s per second.

The 5 year warranty, which I confirmed with Western Digital, is a huge plus for a HDD product. My other WD drive came with a 3 year warranty.

    Cons: Nothing!

The drive is a perfect PC Desktop drive, with excellent performance versus standard 5400 drives and even fast 7200 drives. Installation is fast and effortless, with no error issues. Warranty is the one of the best you will ever see and is backed by great customer service that is the norm from Western Digital. I have used their customer service on my other drive, and came away impressed with their knowledge and speed.

Business Rated NAS Hard Drive9/21/2014 6:41:00 PM

Pros: I reviewed two Western Digital Red Pro series, 2 TB NAS hard drives, with the model number WD2001FFSX. Many people are probably familiar with WD’s standard red NAS drives that have been available for several years now. The original red drives appeared to be a variation on the power conserving green drive series, but with modified firmware to optimize them for use in NAS systems. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the new WD Pro series red drives appear to be based on the well established black line of performance desktop hard drives. If you compare the specs, both the black and red pro series are rated at 7,200 RPMs, both have dual controllers, dual bearings, both are rated for 24 x 7 operation and both models have a five year manufacturer’s warranty. The red Pro drives also have modified firmware to provide for better performance in NAS systems.

Standard desktop drives will take themselves offline periodically for up to a minute to perform internal house keeping maintenance. This typically includes scanning for weak data sectors and moving the data to spare good sectors, before it’s lost or degraded. Most RAID controllers will not tolerate a drive going offline for more than eight seconds. Many desktop rated drives will exceed this 8 second time limit and drop out of the array. What differentiates WD red drives from other drive models is their Time Limited Error Recover (TLER) spec. This WD firmware spec limits drive timeouts to less than 8 seconds.

Other Pro series drive improvements include: Improved 3D balancing, dual spindle bearings, reduced vibration, and reduced operating temperatures, to improve their reliability in cramped NAS cases. The internal WD NASware firmware has been upgraded from v2.0 to v3.0. This new firmware increases the maximum number of hard drives that can be used in a NAS array from 8 standard red, to 16 Pro series red drives. The Pro series are also rated for 24 x 7 business use, where reliability is critical. The Pro red series warranty has been extended from 3 to 5 years.

Cons: Cost. I thought the cost of the Pro series red drives was a little on the high side. Especially when you consider you may need to purchase 4-16 of these drives just to fill a single NAS or RAID system. A typical RAID-5 setup requires a minimum of four hard drives. These are clearly aimed more at business users who are less likely to balk at the added per disk cost.

Overall Review: I installed the two WD Pro red test drives into a freshly loaded Intel Atom dual-core, 64-bit, HP Proliant Micro-Server, which was running Windows Home Server 2011, 64-bit. With its 1-Gbit/Sec network interface, a full 65 GB Windows 7 client backup was completed in only 8 minutes and 35 seconds, at an average transfer rate of 856 Mb/Sec. So allowing for network overhead I thought that was pretty impressive! Other client backups went at similarly rapid speeds.

Both of the WD red Pro drives installed and formatted without any issues. I always do full formats, versus quick formats. In my experience this will provide a more reliable storage experience for my clients. The two red drives consistently operated 6-8°F cooler than the HP Proliant’s stock 250 GB HGST boot disk.

Both red drives were quiet and very responsive. Even with a low power Atom processor, directory queries jumped on to the screen, whenever accessed by Windows File Explorer.

I have been in the PC business since the late eighties and I can tell you that WD is one of the better hard disk manufacturers that you will ever deal with, both from a product quality and a customer support standpoint. They also have one of the best return policies in the hard drive business. WD has a quality control policy of always testing every single hard drive before it leaves their manufacturing facilities.

I have to applaud WD’s marketing, at whomever came up with the idea of color-coding their various drive lines. This make it easier for custom builders like myself to recommend the correct drive for a customer’s application.

Since NewEgg has switched to shipping their bulk OEM hard drives in the little brown boxes, with the custom air cushion inserts, I have not received a single DOA hard drive. I have received DOA drives from other Internet suppliers that used inferior packaging. Shippers are probably the number one point of DOA failure in my experience for mechanical hard drives.

You can feel the quality of these drives just by picking one up. They must weigh about twice as much as a standard desktop-rated blue drive. These appear to be nice solid hard drives and I have no qualms about recommending them for their intended purpose in business grade NAS systems.

    Cool NAS Drive9/22/2014 10:01:46 AM

    Pros: 5 year warranty
    Performance
    Low operating temperature

    Cons: None

Overall Review: I added these two drives to my server tower that had two existing 3TB Western Digital Red drives for storage and a Western Digital Blue Laptop drive for the operating system. I configured the dual 2TB Western Digital Red Pro drives to JBOD with the purpose of hosting my ripped television shows and mp3 music collection.

When transferring about 1TB of data from my existing Western Digital Red drives to the new Western Digital Red Pro drives over SATA III, it transferred with an average of 50MB/s. During this large transfer, the temperature of the drives ranged from 40C to 50C. When idle, the drives stayed below 40C and streaming high definition video the drives never exceeded 43C.

According to the description of the drives, the Red Pro drives should have lower operating temperatures and a 5 year warranty instead of a 3 year. During normal and heavy use, the Red Pro and Red standard drives performed the same for speed and temperature. Based on my results, it appears the difference between the standard red and pro red drives (besides marketing) is the extra 2 years on the warranty. Being that both the standard and pro models are intended for 24/7 use, the 5 year warranty with the red pro drives definitely has more appeal. I would recommend these Red Pro drives for any NAS or home server running 24/7.
