Pros: Very fast, quiet and cool. Simple installation.
Cons: None
Overall Review: I bought 2 of these drives a little over a week ago to install in RAID 0 in my XPS M1730. I saw a huge improvement over the old 5400 rpm drive that was in there. My Sandra 2009 average read speed with these drives is 155MB/sec, with a peak speed of 200MB/sec.
Pros: Super fast seek time, Large Cache, Low price, Long life
Cons: None so far, my 6 Seagate Hard Drives have outlasted all Western Digital drives that I have bought, even after years of torture testing (My external drive and laptop went on deployment with me multiple times while I was in the military. They also survived the high temperatures of the Iraqi desert for 6 months)
Overall Review: Will buy Seagate again for my next HDD purchase.
Pros: Fast, Cheap, Quiet
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: Did I mention this drive is fast?
I upgraded an old Toshiba Satellite that had a 60GB 5200rpm drive, the Seagate 7200.4 has 2.5x throughput when reading and writing(83MB/s vs 32MB/s).
Pros: It is a Cheap drive.
Cons: Total failure after 2 months. The drive spins and clicks. The warranty period is applicable but I have too much personal information on the drive to risk sending it in.
Pros: Quick, quiet, and when it works seems like a great drive.
Caught it on sale for an even better bargain.
Cons: 1 of the 2 I bought only lived long enough to install windows 7, made loud beeping and grinding noises and then quit. Still giving it 4 stars as the working drive is great, and you just have to deal with the fact that some stuff is going to be DOA or close to it.
Overall Review: I wish I had read newegg’s return policy a little more closely, not realizing that returns must be RECEIVED within 30 days, not processed in 30 days like most online retailers. So now I have to return to Seagate.
Pros: Really great drive. I use Seagate in all my computers and they’ve never let me down and this drive is no different. It was a great addition to the 320GB seagate that came with my ASUS G50vt-x5.
Cons: Everyone once in a while the drive makes a loud clicking noise and access freezes for a few seconds, and than it returns to normal like nothing happened. Usually this means the drive is failing, but it’s been doing this for about 7 months and I’ve noticed no degradation in performance and none of my drive utilities pick up any errors. It may just be a quirk in this drive, who knows?
Pros: Fast compared to my previous WD scorpio 5400 RPM drive. Installed latest ubuntu, noticeable speed increase.
Cons: Is warmer, louder, and more power hungry compared to previous drive. That’s to be expected. Extra power draw is minimal. Old drive was .5 watts, this one uses about 1, which is insignificant considering my CPU uses about 35.
Overall Review: Using Read-Only Benchmark from Ubuntu’s disk utility:
Min Read Rate:26.9mb/s
Max Read Rate:105mb/s
Average: 76.8mb/s
Average Access Time: 17.5ms
done on a Gateway MX6959

Sequential Write 51.5MB/s
According to Argus Monitor
S.M.A.R.T data shows uptime to be 68 days 17 hours, which sounds a little low to me but then again for a laptop that’s quite a fair amount of use… Folks, the above specs aren’t bad for a hard drive that’s essentially been running non-stop for 2+ months… And that’s not including all the spin downs and spin ups that it’s seen (which yes, does cause wear on a hard disk). In case you don’t know what the time above translates to I’ll tell you, this drive has been in use for about one and a half to two years. Still peaking at almost 100MB/s Read isn’t bad at all. 😛
Cons: Get’s up to about 55C after prolonged and intensive use, I can’t really complain though, 7200RPM drives get hotter by nature than 5400RPM drives do. If it got up to 60C then I might have a problem…
Overall Review: It’s fast, it’s high quality and has lasted for quite a while. For 50 bones you can’t find anything better, and unless you were planning on archiving the entirety of your local video store’s plethora of DVD’s, it should prove adequate for your needs in terms of space. Any more questions? Good, now go ahead and buy it.
