WD VelociRaptor drives offer an unmatched combination of high performance and high reliability, perfect for workstations, high-end video and photo editing, low-end servers and performance enthusiasts’ systems. It boasts a fast 10,000 RPM spinning speed for fast data access, and operates over SATA III 6 Gbps host interface guaranteeing high throughput. The 2.5″ form factor is ideal for small workstation, high-density storage system, and more.
Designed around a 10,000 RPM spin speed, these SATA 6 Gb/s drives include a 64 MB cache and deliver the ultimate performance for photo and video editing.
With 1.4 million hours MTBF, these drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high capacity SATA drive.
State-of-the-art technology delivers a balance of high performance and high capacity perfect for data-intensive workloads that require large amounts of storage such as video editing, 3D rendering and scientific modeling.
Consumes less active and idle power than the previous generation WD VelociRaptor, while offering 66% more capacity and higher performance.
Technology adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers as one of multiple ways to continue growing hard drive capacities. AF is a more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities.
For workstations and PCs that support smaller form factor hard drives, such as all-in-one workstation PCs and high-density video storage systems, the WD VelociRaptor is available without its signature IcePack mounting frame.*
* Take care to ensure proper thermal management of drives to maintain case temperatures at or below the drive’s specification.
Optimizes operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multi-drive chassis.
The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
In addition to being ROHS compliant, this generation of WD VelociRaptor is also a halogen free design.
Ensures reliability for applications that perform a high incidence of read/write operations at the same physical location on the disk.

Pros: Not expensive, FAST!!!, does what it says on the label. Low DOA rate, in my experience.
Cons: Doesn’t automatically install itself. Has no feet or hands.
Overall Review: I’ve been working as a programmer and system manager for over 25 years. When I say I’ve got “5 – High” tech knowledge, I’m not full of hot air.
If you can’t be bothered to read the specs, you should expect to be disappointed with the results you get. Look, the industry is moving to the 2.5″ format. It allows for more disks in the same amount of space. Yes, it won’t fit in a laptop. No one said it would. It also spins at 10K RPM, which a laptop is unlikely to support even if you could get it in one. Think heat dissipation. Think your laptop can deal with the heat this drive must emit? Don’t fool yourself. I haven’t measured the heat from this drive, but it’s going to be more than a 5400 RPM disk.
Now, for those who could use a helpful suggestion, here’s some for free. This drive is for a 2.5″ bay/sled. THIS drive, the CHTZ, is NOT for a 3.5″ bay. It works well for what it’s intended for.
If you want a 3.5″ version, get the DHTZ for something like $20 less. Just never remove it from the heat sink! You’ll void your warranty. They’ve got a warranty sticker over one of the DHTZ’s screws. The DHTZ’s heat sink is pretty significant, so buying the cheaper product just to throw away the heat sink is wasteful, and since it ends your 5 year warranty, is pointless. If you want cheaper, less warranty, and 2.5″, get a DIFFERENT DRIVE ENTIRELY. I’m not going to recommend another model, as that’s YOUR fun, and I won’t take it away from you. Enjoy!
Pros: So far it boots a lot faster than my WD Caviar Black 1Tb. It runs at 34* C when writing and reading my installations after boots. Runs 34-37* when playing games. Solid construction. Cool looking. It runs as loud as the Caviar Black 1Tb.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: I plan on buying a second one of these and an ssd so that I can have a safer and higher performance disk drives through raid configurations. These would be excellent. They read fast and stay cool
Pros: only way to get SAS-like performance in a low-end server with Intel or other host-RAID controller that only supports SATA. Also, consumes less power than a comparable SAS drive.
Cons: costs more than the model with heatsink kit? I’m guessing this has to do with expected warranty claims as these bare drives are likely to be subjected to heavier use and potentially not cooled as well.
Overall Review: if you’re buying this for your workstation, you need to have a fan-cooled hard drive bay. If mounting in 3.5″ bay, better to stay silent and save money and get the model that comes with a heatsink.
** This is perfect match for a 4-bay 2.5″ hot-swap enclosure from iStarUSA. The 6-bay enclosures don’t have enough height to mount these drives.
Pros: Almost as small as an ssd, 10,000 RPM, 1TB, 49.99. I will take two thank you very much!
Cons: none
Overall Review: Highly recommend high performance, reliability, and small form factor. Do not put in laptop!
Pros: Timely plannedemic shipping not withstanding from other than the egg. Waited a long time for this ‘special’. This makes about #14 WD Raptor purchased. Except for an ssd there is probably no better on the market….still using a variety of 75-500gb WDs purchased over the past 20 years. Only two have ever failed.
Read many reviews about how it could be used/refurbed. Well it may be 4/15 manufacture but arrived in OEM packing (ie plastic end caps, factory seal static bag). Looks puuurtee new to me.
Cons: There are no cons – after all it’s Western Digital.
Overall Review: as above
Pros: Have purchased 5 of them exclusively for boot drives. Purchased them for business hence they do not show up on my personal account. They are quite awesome for a boot drive (read other…) No problems with the Raptors what so ever, no bad sectors, not DOA, all work as expected. All passed my rigorous 24h stress test with flying colors…! I torture new mechanical drives with ‘butterfly’ reads/writes for 24h, then run extended surface scans before declaring them good to use for production.
Cons: None I can tell except the ungodly price for 1TB mechanical drive…
Overall Review: Have tested them against SSD’s for booting Windows 7, there is a definite difference in boot time with the Raptors being slower. This was to satisfy my curiosity and it is FYI for you: SSD’s allowed that Quad Core PCs to boot in ~10 secs, these Raptors took ~20s, WD Black took ~50s to boot, regular 7200rpm drive took well over a minute.
I still do not like the limited number of writes on SSD’s…! I may be excessively suspicious, BUT ~3,000 write cycles for a MLC cell scares the socks out of me (with TRIM enabled, it is even less that that…)
Pros: Best non-SSD
Makes a lil spool-up noise when waking (yes, I do like it)
Cons: Produces more heat than other conventional drives
Makes muffled old-school nut-grinder noises when accessing data (not silent)
Overall Review: Faster, and smaller format than other conventional HDDs
It’s the last (and the peak) of the spinny’s.

Pros: its an enterprise spinning drive that does what it says. not ssd but doesnt have to worry about wearing out.
Cons: not an ssd
Overall Review: this is to balance the previous review, as the previous reviewer clearly mis represented the product and himself. buying this drive to put in a macbook is clearly the fault of the buyer and not of the drive , Newegg Clearly states that the drive is an Enterprise drive. Additionally you stated that your tech knowledge is (5) High, this clearly cant be the case since you had know idea what the form factor the raptor drives came in (drives that have been out for years). please make sure you know the product before buying it
Pros: Not expensive, FAST!!!, does what it says on the label.
Pros: its an enterprise spinning drive that does what it says. not ssd but doesnt have to worry about wearing out.
Cons: not an ssd
