Pros: Affordable, nice capacity, recyclable packaging
Cons: Power saving scheme is terrible
Overall Review: It’s a good drive for what I needed- upgrading a 2008 Macbook from 250gb. The box has the big OSX logo on it, though I was on Snow Leopard instead of Lion. No problems there after installation.
The big problem is that no matter what power settings you use in OSX, adapter or battery, the drive spins down IMMEDIATELY. Not after an idle period, immediately after loading a file. Even browsing a simple news webpage had the drive spinning up and down every 5 seconds. Mechanical drives have a finite number of cycles, so this is very detrimental to the life of the drive. I would have expected as much for a Green series drive, but this is supposed to be Blue series.
Manufacturer’s site is no help, as the only tools they have to even address this problem are for Windows. Luckily, I found a DIY script that allows Mac users to adjust the settings. As far as I’m concerned, my problems are addressed and I will continue using the drive. But I wouldn’t recommend purchasing it for OSX unless you’re comfortable messing around in the OS (but chances are if you’re comfortable with the hardware installation, you’ll be fine).
I get it, this is the age of saving power. But sleeping immediately after opening a file is like turning your car off and on at every stop sign.
Pros: Fit perfectly, I used Acronis to clone my old drive. Put it in my lap top and the delayed write stopped the sluggish performance was gone.
Worked out great.
Cons: It isn’t an SSD.
