Comments: I had one of these in my work provided laptop. It performed well, until it started to make weird noises. One day windows started crashing left and right and then I received blue screens of death. Finally, SMART started thowing BIOS leave error warnings about impending failure. I barley got my data off it. I contacted our internal desktop support and the guys said that almost all of these hard drives end up crashing. To bad, they are fast drives, But just don’t last.
Comments: This hard drive was an excellent buy. My old hard drive was only 6 gig and upgrading to 60 gig was awesome. My laptop is no longer sluggish due to lack of memory. The price was excellent and the hard drive works like a champ, no problems whatsoever. And of course Newegg delivered to my overseas mailbox in minimal time.
Comments: Using as an extra drive in my wife’s thinkpad (you can buy an UltraBay2000 adapter to add an extra hd to thinkpad laptops). Don’t really notice the noise.
Comments: just bought this for a laptop i forgot that i had. it makes about as much noise as the 40gb drive that originally came with the laptop. as fast as it should be.
Comments: Installed this drive in an older Apple PowerBook G3 (Firewire) and the drive is faster than the original (a Toshiba 20Gb). No noise issues – seems to sound the same as the original drive.
Comments: Great speed. Wonderful upgrade drive
Comments: i got this yesterday for a 12″ ibook and replaced the stock toshiba 40g 4200 which was INAUDIBLE. i realize a 5400rpm drive will make more noise, but this drive is WHINING. its loud enough in the ibook that i cant focus when im reading a website. its like a high frequncy signal that subconciously fatigues my head.
anyway i think its having a problem b.c there is no way so many reviewers (40gb, 60gb, 80gb) would not comment on this noise. as stated in previous reviews the seek times are noticably faster than 4200rpm drive. the heat output is slightly higher but not uncomfortably so.
if it wasnt whining it would be 5-star upgrade. i will rma and see if new one makes the same sound, if so i would seriously recommend mac owners to look elsewhere.
