Pros: Thin 7mm, decent speed for single platter 5400, low power, silent. Self encrypting with software support (FIPS cert’d). NCQ support.
These are single platter drives, so don’t expect transfer rates like dual platter drives. On the other hand, if you are using 7mm drives already, you know this. The 5400 rpm speed sacrifices speed for power savings and noise. I don’t hear these drives–ymmv.
If you want a basic self-encrypting drive that works off the hard drive password, you want the ST500LT025. These drives require additional software to be fully utilized.
Both this and the 025 versions will work as a standard 500GB unencrypted drive if you use no password. (The encryption engine is running, but it shows up as an open drive).
Much less expensive than an SSD if you need 7mm heights.
Cons: Slow at the drive edge like any singe platter drive. Better for data in that respect than a primary drive.
Be aware that the SED models do not support Seagate Smart-Align.
Overall Review: Too bad nobody makes a slim enclosure for 7mm devices.
