Pros: Due to the conspicuous lack of the word “New” mentioned in the info here, the fact that mine arrived with an msdos partition table already setup, selling for roughly 1/2 price of a new one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145164, and the small white decal on the bottom of mine looking very used, I have to go with it’s most likely a refurb.
Now this is not to imply this is a bad deal for the price. Not the ultimate deal for this model as a refurb, but not bad either. I was “hoping” for new, but at this price, I’m not complaining either.
It seems it’s a shot in the dark as to hdd longevity today. I have a WD 750MB drive that’s been powered up nearly non stop for 10 years as my used daily main Linux box, and yet my last purchased WD 500MB hdd that didn’t make it 2 years, in a system that was powered up at most, 10 hours a day.
Time will tell, but if these drives were refurbed in a quality controlled environment to standards of half that of new, they should still easily outlast my last new WD hdd.
Cons: Seems to be a refurb
Overall Review: I’d have to come back here after I get a min of 2 years success running 24-7 to give an honest opinion.
Pros: Works as it should. Great speeds and quiet operation. Bought a couple of these to replace some WD “Enterprise Drives” that all 4 failed in less than a year. I have these and other Hitachi drives that have proven reliability, some for over ten years of 24/7 service.
Cons: Non at all.
Overall Review: I use Hitachi drives exclusively and every time I use another manufacturer trying to save money for a client it is always disappointing. Never again will I buy anything else.
Pros: Great transfer rate
Cons: It is a lot louder than any other hard drive i have had before. I don’t know if there is a setting i can change to make it a bit more tolerable but as of right now it is really loud. I will be looking more into this problem.
Overall Review: overall it is a good hard drive but its just too loud.
Pros: Heavy, solid feel. Spins up without any odd noises.
Cons: Goes to sleep while I’m working on files, and has to spin back up when I need to save a file, or switch tasks. Don’t know if this is typical with other drives, but has never been noticeable with my Seagate drives. This could be user error on my part.
Overall Review: I use this in a OWC Thunderbay IV enclosure, and it works great. Much higher quality than the Seagate barracudas I’m used to. I am a freelance retoucher, and while working on big files in PS for an extended period of time, this drive seems to go to sleep. When I want to save the file, open another file, etc. I have to wait for the drive to spin back up (15 seconds or so). I don’t know if this drive operates differently because it’s an enterprise drive, but my Seagate drives never did this. This could be user error, maybe there’s an OS setting I need to investigate. Anyway, I’ll take this minor inconvenience for the excellent build quality of these drives (which is why I won’t knock an egg off). I have two of them, and will report back if either die.
Pros: worked as it should. Ive had the drive for a week now and have had no issues yet.
Cons: none
Pros: 1Tb
cheap
Cons: Not ssd
Overall Review: storage drive
Pros: Price
Capacity
Cons: Speed
Overall Review: There is no denying that this product is about the price point and that is probably the cheapest terabyte of storage you can buy. The speed is obviously not up to modern standards but I personally use it for bulk storage of photography data so the speed isn’t so critical to me.

Pros: I’ve had the least, and fewest, problems with Hitachi drives after some 20 years of replacing 2 or 3 drives per month. Enterprise level are a bit noisier but seem to last well longer. WAY longer. Actually raises a question – there are only a couple places in the world that make the components and drives… so why are some (ok, most) “other” brands going dead with under 2000 hours? I have an external Hitachi I actually dropped TWICE (some days are like that), and it is still running fine – use it almost every day for some reason or other.
Cons: Already had 8300 hours on it when I received it – actually two of them that both had 8200-8300 hours, an aspect that kinda would be nice to see beforehand. The first SMART test will show that, and if you’re smart yourself you’ll run a test the day you get the drive to be sure it is good. Ya never know what happens on the truck. OK, it’s a refurb, but these are made to run 50k+ without failing so should still have lots of life left.
Overall Review: The brand is good, but the sales pitch could at least mention the fact these are not “new”. Misleading probably to the uninformed – although those of us who handle drives a lot pretty much know how the deal works. Other reviews have mentioned the facts that seem to be hidden. For the cost however – worth it.
