Pros: Runs quieter, cooler, and with less vibration than the comparable Seagate drive. Made in Thailand, which is where the OEM drives of many legitimate computer companies are made. Worked right out of the box. The drive has both the standard SATA power and the IDE power cable outlets, giving you options depending on your power cable options. Newegg Customer Services is first rate.
Cons: None, only “Pros” above. I will stick to this drive in the future.
Overall Review: Note that this drive comes only in a sealed foil pouch, but without screws or cables. It also comes without formatting software, so you will need to format in Disk Management (Windows XP).
Pros: Mostly quiet. Runs fast (see other thoughts). I’ll never use all the space. Slightly faster than the 1TB model (to the tune of about .0001% 😉 ).
Cons: Now that I’ve got some quiet fans, I can hear it seeking, a muted grinding noise. Until I get some more absorption (I have it mounted to the bottom of my case), it and the PSU fan are the loudest things (but nowhere near my old Seagate 7200.7).
Overall Review: I spent about two months debating on whether or not I wanted to spend the premium $$$’s on the Raptor’s RPM or on space. I was convinced on the Raptor, but was wincing at all the reviews of the noise.
Finally found a comparison on this and the Raptor, and found that this beat the Raptor in all but seek times (beat it in loading applications, too). It’s the density of the disk that does it, and I’m lovin’ it.
Until WD updates their Raptor line to compete with the current 7200RPM drives, there’s no need to go for speed (and noise).
Highly recommended.
Pros: Must have been one of the first to pick one up. Went to newegg several times over the past week to look at drives, came back friday afternoon and there it was. Much quieter than my old drive(s) even with AAM not enabled. Very fast, windows loads 10-15 seconds faster and games load much quicker as well. Very pleased.
Cons: Not completely silent. Runs very hot, ended up putting it on rails in a 5.25 bay to get it more cooling. Also had some problems ghosting my old drive to it, not sure if it was the drive’s fault or my own as I’ve never used ghost before. Would randomly hitch when booting before I decided to wipe clean and start anew.
Overall Review: Was very close to picking up the WD drive, decided when I saw this to go for it despite the lack of reviews for the 750gb model. Hoping that it provides the same or similar performance to the 1TB model. As always, newegg shipping is the best. Next day delivery from ground shipping… amazing 🙂
Pros: This is my third Hitachi SATA drive I have purchased from new egg. All three are still running great. None of them have been noisy at all. You can hear them when they acess the data, but frankly, I like to know when my hardware is working. (Ya, I use flowmaster mufflers on my vehicles also, except for the long distance cruisers.)
Cons: Lets see, they are not bigger for less money? Seriously, BACK UP your data as often as it is valuable to you on any drive. They spin real fast and the heads fly over the surface closer than you can really imagine. Got data? It needs to be in 2 or 3 different places unless you just don’t care if you lose it.
Overall Review: My company sells the large Hitachi arrays under our brand name, so I knew that a lot of your data is stored on Hitachi by large, demanding US companies. Also, I know that the Quality and Research and Development was in every drive. 🙂 – and no, I don’t make any money off Hitachi, wish I did!
Pros: 750 GB for $90 after rebate – not bad at all.
Cons: The seeking is louder than other drives.
Overall Review: Many others have noted that the drive runs hot. It does when you place it on a desk, but the temps are normal in a moderatly crowded mATX case with a few fans. Temp probe taped to the top of the HD reads about 35-36C, and I can put my hand on it indefinitely without getting burned.
Pros: +Extremely low cost per GB, +Faster than a 150GB Raptor in all areas except those relating to seek time (due to lower RPM), +Quiet operation, definitely quietest of my 3 HDs.
Cons: -None so far, of course there isn’t much way to tell how long it will last.
Overall Review: A big wildcard of course will be how long this thing lasts. If it has a decent lifetime, this is definitely a 5-star product.
Basically this is a very cost-efficient, very fast hard disk. As long as it gets a good lifespan, I’ll be extremely happy with my purchase.
Pros: Installed in my MacPro as 3rd drive primarily for HD video. Initialized and worked flawlessly. *Very quiet* — not sure what noise some are complaining about. Fast.
Cons: None yet.

Pros: Excellent drive. I build high end gaming rigs and usually stick with Raptors or Seagate .10 or .11 drives…these are easily faster than my Seagates and almost as fast as my Raptors. Barely get warm: much cooler than comparable drives. Cannot hear them at all in my LL V2000. No issues at all.
Cons: None
Overall Review: Why is it that some reviewers give this drive 4 stars because it takes a long time to format? That makes no sense. Would you give a 1TB drive 3 stars then? Take these reviews with a grain of salt. My guess is at least half of them are written by people that have not a clue about PC HW. Glad I took a gamble and tried the Hitachis.
