Pros: NewEgg shipped these in individual, very well padded boxes. I’m not concerned about damage due to handling at all. They’re fast and work great so far. All 4 passed RAID initialization and verification.
Cons: Really loud. I have an Antec Sonata case which used to be mostly silent. Now whenever there is disk access I can hear it in other rooms!
Overall Review: Even if they’re loud, I’m using the drives for long term redundant storage in a NAS. As long as the MTBF is true, I can deal with some noise.
Pros: Hitachi Ultrastar series of drives are recommended by RAID contoller makers – – most drives are not.
I have only a few of these drives and have no failures yet.
Cons: I did not purchase from Newegg because I cannot trust their packaging. The handling of disk drives is critical; however, Newegg has a reputation for poor packaging which leads to a much higher failure rate than is normal for disk drives.
Overall Review: I would pay $5 more for a drive which I knew had the OEM packaging.
Failure rate in data centers for this drive is less than 3% in the first 12 months. The big difference is the way the drives are packed for shipping.
Pros: I have dozens of Deskstar drives spinning. Some old enough to be IBM Deskstars. I suppose you may find faster drives, or quieter drives maybe cooler drives. You can even spend a lot more money. But, my personal track record with Deskstar be it IBM or HGST is flawless. Any deskstar I’ve retired has been because it was outdated. Never a failure. When it comes to data storage reliability is second to none. Decades of reliability.
Cons: It’s hard to find a reason to complain. I suppose if you don’t design proper cooling they can run hot. So design proper cooling.
Overall Review: Other more popular brands, I’ve tried them. Most of them I ended up with the RMA address memorized. I’d never had to RMA a Deskstar. Some people call them the DEATH star. I’ll call them the ROCK star. They are rock solid.
Pros: When they work, they deliver good preformance at a decent price.
Cons: 20% DOA rate so far from 2 different suppliers. That is far from Enterprise performance. DOA on enterprise should be 1/1000 or less
Overall Review: we are switching to WD Enterprise
Pros: 1 TB, Hitachi reputation, Server grade so it’s expected to run continuously for a long time.
Cons: Only con would be price, but one pays for the extra quality and reliability.
Overall Review: When a fellow who has to keep large banks of drives running for weather prediction tells me what’s solid, I listen. The UltraStar was one of the few drives he liked. Or perhaps didn’t dislike.
Pros: Owned 16 of these over 4 years brand new running 24/7/365. Not one single failure. All hooked up to 2 LSI SAS/SATA RAID card on rackmount. Runs perfectly. Properly cooled, these will last forever!
Cons: HOT!!!! Just like any enterprise drive, you need proper cooling. I have 14 fans in the rackmount that holds video production data and it keeps the drives around 74° F. If you do not cool them, just like any other drive that is high end , they will croak. Don’t wine if you throw it in a dinky case and the drive dies. This is not meant for that
Overall Review: People need to realize these and not for backup. These drives were ment for low to mid-range servers. Ideally with hot-swap bays. Don’t cry if the drive dies jamming it in a backup container with inadequate cooling. Its not the drives fault but your lack of foresight to cool a drive that is not consumer. Get a low consumer drive if you plan to backup. Not this.
Pros: – Bought it on 07/24/2012 and Now 4/6/2013 it still WORK!
– I don’t know what is the deal with the other people bad luck. But I only buy 1 and it work.
– I buy this because of 1 reason I was fed up with Seagate baracuda and Western Digital green horrible Hdd 1Tb crash on me within 1 year. I lose so much data.
Let me give you a tip to get the best out of “this enterprise class hdd”
I ONLY put this “enterprise class” hard drive in this :
SNT SNT-125B Black 3.5″ SATA Hard drive to 5.25″ Bay SATA Mobile Rack Removable Hard drive kit
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817993031
Why?
Because this HotSwap Drive bay have a “FAN”!!! yes FAN.
You NEED this + the hard drive. Or else you would probably get a dead drive due to heat.
Cons: The drive is really Hot.
Like many other reviewer here complain.. Yes it’s hot.
Solution: Go buy the HDD Bay that have A FAN. Then the drive shouldn’t fail on you.
Beside It make sense right? Back then when I buy this it was 120$ while the Segate Baracuda was at 100$…
I paid more because I want this “enterprise class” hard drive to store all my important data. So I got to do all I can to keep hard drive from failing. and the number one problem in a PC is heat. So that’s why I buy the Bay + Fan to cool it down for extra insurance…
Overall Review: 100% no doubt. High recomendation.
I never want to buy a Segate again.. Ever..
I have a Hitachi Desktar it never fail. But I wanted to go for the “extra high reliablity” I buy the Hitatchi Ultrastar.
So yeah up to you guys. I don’t want be saving 20-50$ and then 2-3 year later I lose 500gb-1TB of data…

Pros: Solid Enterprise class drives. Quiet. Passed all badblock and SMART checks without issue on delivery. Been running strong 24×7 in my Server for almost a year. I was happy enough with these I purchased two more shortly after buying these.
Cons: none
Overall Review: These drives have been running strong 24×7 in a Raid6 array without issue for 11 months. I am very pleased with Hitachi drives thus far.
