Pros: They’re cheap, especially with the current promo, so you can afford to buy 2 and set up a RAID 1.
Cons: Hitachi substituted this substandard hard drive for the ones I actually ordered (Newegg part number N82E16822145369). One worked, one was DOA. Waiting for the replacement now.
Overall Review: Very disappointed with Hitachi for this underhanded (illegal?) move.
Pros: Very fast drive. Originally got a Samsung F4 because I read that despite the low RPM the drive was very fast. I did not find that true and in fact had problems with it in my 2600k build(the F4 works fantastically in my 1090t machine…weird). Was considering getting a WD Black 2TB drive because my 1TB Black was sooo fast, but the price scared me away. Saw this on special @ NewEgg and the specs matched up with the WD Black 2TB for MUCH less so Decided to take the Jump…HAPPY I DID! This is faster than my 1TB Black and 2TB F4 (even when in the 1090t machine) and is actually whisper quiet. Games load wicked fast and I couldn’t be more please. Was a die-hard WD fan, but now I find their drives are a bit overpriced.
Cons: The unfortunate reputation that these drives have due to the IBM “DeathStar” issue from years (eons in computer years) ago. These are NOTHING like the old IBM’s I also have a 1TB 32mb Hitachi and 500GB 32mb Hitachi drives and they have been fantastic. Hitachi is a different company from IBM, I wish they changed the name of the drives as these have little in common with the old IBM “DeathStars”
Overall Review: Great Drive! Totally recommend these over the WD Blacks or the Samsung F4’s. I really hope these force WD to lower prices as the Blacks are WAY overpriced.
Pros: On receiving this, I performed two long formats and then set it to loop “chkdsk /r” for almost a week. No problems at all. Also, the one I got this time is very well-balanced and runs cool and quiet. It’s MUCH less noisy than the two Brand-W Blue 640GB drives that it replaced. Neither the platter rotation nor the head mechanism makes a bit of noise. Also, it’s fast enough over nearly 40% of the platters to saturate a SATA-I port. HDTune scores it 168/123/75 MB/sec and 13.2ms average access time. Not too shabby!! Supports SMART, 48-Bit addr, Read look-ahead, write cache, host protected area, device config overlay, upgradeable F/W, Advanced- and Interface-Power management, PUIS, Security mode, and NCQ, according to HDTune. The large 64MB cache is a nice plus, too.
Cons: None that I know of. While it’s not the cheapest drive, it appears well-made and is probably worth a premium price.
Overall Review: Maybe it’s just luck or something, but I never seem to have the problems that many reviewers here seem to have with this or that hardware. This disk, so far, is no exception. (But then, I had two of the famous DTLAs run to 48,000 hours each too. They still work, too.) Newegg usually ships from NJ to me, but this one came from CA, and it was very well packed. It survived the Trial By UPS just fine. Powered up and was immediately ready to use, without clicks or other funny noises. After all that exercising SMART reports 0 seek errors, 0 reallocated/0 pending sectors, and 0 other problems.
Pros: Seem to be very fast when they work.
Cons: 2 out of 4 drives ordered were DOA. NewEgg was fantastic about sending out 2 new drives, a few weeks later one of the drives sent for RMA is dead. I have ordered Hitatchi drives in the past with no issues, there must be a bad batch of drives.
Pros: These are very nice drives for the money. Relatively quiet and quite speedy for the money.
Cons: I purchased four of these to attach to ARECA 1231ML in RAID 5. The first shipment, one drive had physical damage – broken sata connector, due to bad packing. NewEgg promptly accepted RMA and sent replacement. The replacement drive, bubble wrap was 50% flat. Hitachi drive fitness test failed the drive after 2-3minutes. NewEgg just noitified me today, replacement is on it’s way via UPS. The three drives have been cruising along with no issues. Hopefully, this drive will be well packed and survive, as i really need 2more TB.
Overall Review: I wish newegg would add a rating system for “newegg”. That way we could separate the product from newegg. Since, this is a rating of the product only, I have to give it 5 Eggs! For “newegg”, I have to give zero eggs for the shipping department, and five eggs for the RMA process.
Pros: – Massive 64MB cache
– Ten thousand acres of hard drive real estate
Cons: None
Overall Review: I’m in the storage industry and I see the qualification results of a *lot* of hard drives from a lot of different vendors. I also get to see the actual service history metrics. I won’t name names, but Hitachi is the ONLY consumer-grade drive that I’ll use in my home PC. MTBF of specifically the 500MB, 1TB, and 2TB Hitachis are miles ahead of the pack. Don’t screw around with your data.
Pros: Not DOA, And works well with the system. No bad sectors, and passes all the HDD tests I have thrown at it so far. Surprised at the data transfer rate attained in HD Tune considering I am currently using the drive through a SATA 2 connection. Read other thoughts for performance test results.
Drive is also very cool and silent compared to my WD Black drives.
Decent HD Tune outcome. Read other thoughts.
Cons: None
Overall Review: The HD Tune Pro Test results are as follows

I will update this once I run crystal mark on it. This is through a SATA 2 connection. It should improve if run through a SATA 3 connection.
Overall I am very happy with this drive. Will see how it continues to perform once I get the new computer put together (as it will be the main Storage Drive)

Pros: Good quality. Fast. Reliable. Quiet.
Cons: Price at $199 is high right now, but most other 2TB drives are in the same range.
Overall Review: My old PC died a few months ago, so had to do a new build and wanted new drives since my old ones were getting full. The first drives I got was the Seagate Barracuda 3TB (from somewhere else) and both drives died within on week of use. After that I got the WD Black 2TB. They worked well in the 3 weeks that I used them, but were noisy and could hear a non-stop high pitch sound from them.
After that I got two of these Hitachi 2TB drives. The price was more than I wanted to spend ($200 each) but I’ve been using them since the first of Jan with no issues. They have 1500 hours of use. The Hitachi drive gets good speeds around 120-140 MB/sec and are super silent. My guess is that the people with DOA drives might have got dropped/damaged during shipping. Mine was sent FedEX 2 day with Shop Runner. If the price of these Hitachi drops, then I’d get 2 more for RAID 1.
Pros: They’re cheap, especially with the current promo, so you can afford to buy 2 and set up a RAID 1.
