Data center decisions are driven by TCO. Higher capacity hard drives play a leading role in reducing TCO. An 18TB data center internal hard drive provides 29% more capacity in the same form factor as a 14TB HDD. Higher capacity HDDs enable data centers to lower CapEx by reducing supporting hardware and system level costs when compared to lower capacity drives. Helium-sealed, low power, high reliability drives reduce energy and maintenance costs, contributing to OpEx savings. For example, a data center using 18TB HDDs vs. 14TB HDDs can require 22% fewer racks while consuming 21% less power per TB at idle, resulting in significant overall TCO reduction for data center environments.
Ultrastar DC HC550 integrates a suite of technologies on a 9-disk platform to create a new class of HDDs. 18TB capacity is achieved by combining technologies that improve areal density working together with technologies that improve performance and reduce power consumption. ● The first internal hard drives in the industry to harness Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording (EAMR) technology improves writability and therefore increases areal density. ● The industry’s first Triple Stage Actuator (TSA) enhances head-positioning accuracy, delivering better performance and increased areal density. ● HelioSeal® technology is the foundation for Western Digital’s high capacity HDDs and this is the 6th generation of HelioSeal product. Western Digital has shipped >65 million HelioSeal products to date.

Pros: – No errors with full badblocks pass
– Lot’s of space
Cons: – More expensive now than when I bought.
Overall Review: I previously owned WD Red Pro 18 TB drives. These are absolutely identical in terms of hardware (as far as I can tell). May have firmware differences, but I doubt it. So between this and the Red Pro, I’d buy whichever was cheaper. They both look identical and have same performance.
Pros: Huge storage and relatively fast for platter drive
Cons: Stopped working after a few months
Overall Review: Maybe I got a dud – but expensive if they dont last.

Pros: -It plugs and play
Cons: -None so far
– It does make an odd noise when doing file transfers if its been idle for and extended period of time.
Overall Review: This is a solid HDD so far. I plugged it in and was recognized. Keep in mind you will about 10% of stated capacity when formatted (mine showed 16.3TB after formatting) though that is not unexpected. Drive does have a 5 Year Warranty. Was able to confirm through WD Online chat, they also advised that Data Center drives like this it is NOT necessary to register the product. WD chat was very helpful. I would buy again
Pros: Drives are easy to install, heavy duty, LOTS of space!
Cons: These drives ARE heavy and require careful mounting..
Newegg NEEDS to learn how to pack these Bad Boys! One sheet of bubble on only one side of the drive is not sufficient for shipping.
Overall Review: We were lucky they arrived intact given the poor packing for these heavy duty drives. SHAME on Newegg! We would’ve given 5 eggs in our rating if not for this! Buy at your own risk.
Pros: – Large capacity especially if you download a lot of stuff.
– Only Newegg has 20TB versions. Canada Computers only has up to 18TB Ultrastar versions
– It’s Western Digital
Western Digital customer service is a thousands times better than the @$$hats at Seagate.
Cons: – you know the usual, claimed capacity is never TRUE capacity
– Out of 20TB you get to use 18.1 if i’m not mistaken
Overall Review: Had ONE Seagate drive in my life, and it was the bane of my blood pressure. Complete garbage. The stupid thing always fell asleep for some reason. And noone could give me a straight answer as to why.
ALWAYS buy Western Digital and save yourself the stress. In 30 years, I’ve never had ANY issue with Western Digital.
Overall Review: Bought in Nov 2021, received in Dec 2021, well tested since then.
Till today, Apr 2022, the drive is still running fine, fully utilized 16TB, worth of money
Thank you seller. Nice package with big bubble wraps and two boxes on it ensuring the disk is not damaged by the shock during shipment
Overall Review: Excellent drives, they work as advertised, ordered 4, none were damaged or had any issues

Pros: 16TB, 7200rpm
Cons: It’s kind of loud, warranty confusion
Overall Review: This drive is on the cutting edge with all the bells and whistles – EAMR, helium-filled, triple stage actuator, and a whopping nine platters. When it spins up, you can feel it and hear it running. I use it as a backup drive in an external enclosure, so I spin it down when it’s not in use.
I’m a bit unclear on the warranty policy. I got it cause I thought it was 5 years (as it is on WDC’s site), but Newegg is listing it as a 2 year warranty, so if it’s actually 2 years (which seems wrong), that would be a big negative.
