The ProLiant DL180 G6 Server features the latest Intel Xeon processors, an increased DIMM slot count, small form factor (SFF) drives, up to internal storage capacity, and efficient memory and power supplies. It is a flexible, space-saving solution combining the benefits of a compute node with those of a storage server.
Right-sized solution with Flexible optionDense 2U rack design enables increased usage of server rack and data center. Up to 14 LFF SATA pluggable hard disks and up to 192 GB of DDR3 memory support allows you to expand your business with confidence and lesser investment. The HP 590638-001 also comes with one internal PCI Expressx 16 slot to support low-profile/half-length cards and three PCI-E x8 slots to support full-height/ half-length cards.

Pros: RAID controller is fast, comes with battery backup so that write caching can be enabled safely. The controller is smart enough to shut off write caching automatically if the battery is low and turn it back on when the battery is charged back up. There is an spot for a second PSU. Hard drive controller is hot pluggable. Comes with rack mounting hardware that the server can sit on.
Cons: Does not come with a DVD drive. You’ll need HP part 481043-B21 (DVD-RW) or 481041-B21 (plain DVD). Or you can just plug in an external USB DVD drive to get things installed initially.
Overall Review: Remember that you must buy hard drives for this server. Either direct HP parts or you can buy the _trays_ and the _hard drives_ separately and assemble them yourself. If you want RAID 6 or 6+0, you’ll need to buy the license 516471-B21 from HP.
I made sure the hotswap worked for the hard drives by pulling out one of the drives in my RAID array. When I put it back in, the array went into an automatic rebuild mode to get that drive back up to speed.
Note that the server does not come with a NEMA 5-15 AC plug because they assume your rack has a C13 socket strip. I do not, so I just used another “regular” power cord I had laying around to plug in to my battery backups.
Oh, the hot swap hard drive tray caddies are HP part 373211-001. They don’t currently sell them on Newegg, so if you are putting together your own hard drives you’ll have to buy those from somewhere else.
