Pros: – Even as delivered, these older Dell workstations can still handle the server needs of a small business, or running a large suite of security cameras.
– Can be very cheaply upgraded to the max the platform supports, making this a very capable server or workstation for a small business. Configured with a 6-core Xeon, 24GB triple-channel RAM and a raid setup, these systems can hang with a business desktop you would buy now for $900-1200.
– Nothing in this system is truly Dell Proprietary. You can replace the power supply, cooling fans and heatsinks, or even change the way drives and other components are bracketed if you have spare mounting hardware. Really nice since earlier models would even use special screws and fasteners.
Cons: – Due to age, these have a few feature limitations vs. current systems. The SATA controller is only SATA2, so you would need an add-in card to get full performance out of modern drives for example.
Overall Review: If you are looking for a business server, or even a home gaming server, you can have something workable with one of these right out of the box. It may be a little older, but was so over-specced for its time that it still compares very well to the low-end business PCs that any small business would realistically be looking at.
If you really want to go crazy, you can throw another $250 or so at one of these and have a very decent gaming PC or rendering rig. I put a hexa-core Xeon and a decent GPU and the system benchmarks nearly identically to a current gen i5, or Ryzen R6.
