Pros: I bought this in January 2014 (8 months ago). I have been using it as an internal disk in a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon. That machine is left running 24×7. It sees about 8-10 hours a day where I’m actively using the machine, and the rest of the time it’s not doing much more than waiting for incoming email.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: I had some initial problems with it, all of which related to the fact that the capacity is over 2-TB, and I was running into hardware and software issues due to that. Once I got it setup right, it has been working fine.
Those problems were partially due to me running an old version of MacOS 10 at the time, and partially because for the initial setup I tried using this drive in some external disk enclosures which didn’t support larger capacity drives. There were no problems with the drive itself.
Pros: Ordered 2x of these 3TB Hitachi drives to replace two Seagates D00m drives (which were warranty replacements of warranty replacements, notoriously prematurely failure prone drives).
I expected the free egg saver shipping to take 4-6 days or whatever was quoted but the next day the package was on my porch. Drives were in anti static bags, properly bubble wrapped and not moving around, delightful.
Presently rsyncing data onto both at once via a pair of thunderbolt 1 hard drive bays, each housing four drives.
The copies are from same enclosure to same enclosure, each new drive is in each enclosure. Presently watching both drives write around 117-202 MB/sec (a huge tarball is sustaining the 200 MB/sec speed presently).
Great price, great warranty (5 years), fairly quiet (no odd noises, just normal read/write sounds) and man, the speed is excellent.
This is using the ext4 file system in both drives.
Cons: I should have bought more drives to replace the other seagates! I might just do that if there’s still stock left.
Pros: I thought the price was right.
NewEgg Customer Service comes through!
Cons: I picked up 4 of these drives online from another vendor for a backup RAID system. One failed quickly, and I was able to return it through the other vendor which we all know and love. To make a long story short, I bought a 5th one here at NewEgg as a spare. Months later, I broke it out and found it was bad (that is 2 from this product line). The drive was stamped with a 2011 manufacturing date, and HGST refused to honor their warranty.
Overall Review: I am very skeptical of HGST drives now, mostly because of their customer service.

Pros: – Low Price
– Capacity
– Decent Speed (100-110MB/s write, 140-150MB/s read sequential)
Cons: – Older drive, warranty may be nearly expired if not already
Overall Review: Received this drive a few days ago and have copied about 1TB or data and ran it through badblocks a couple of times without any errors or bad sectors found yet. These got really good reliability ratings as well. Be sure to test it out as much as possible when you get it as the warranty is likely expired since these drives are likely from 2011-2012. The price is great compared to newer drives and they seem to be solid drives. I believe the seller offers a 30 or 90 day return at least, if you cant get help from Hitachi.
