The Deskstar 5K3000 hard drive provides an enormous capacity and features innovative CoolSpin technology to deliver a greater level of power efficiency and quiet operation for energy-conscious, environmentally-friendly computers. Key to CoolSpin technology is an optimization of motor speed to provide an ideal balance of performance, power utilization and acoustics. The CoolSpin technology, along with other Hitachi power management techniques, gives the Deskstar 5K3000 its 29% power savings over the Deskstar 7K3000. The latest SATA III interface delivers noticeable data transfer boost of up to 2x the speed of SATA Revision II, reaching the speed of 6Gbps.
Power efficient for cooler operation and longer lifeCoolSpin and HiVERT technologies combine to create this new class of hard drive that delivers excellent power utilization and thermal emissions. HiVERT technology helps efficiently manage power consumption. These innovations, along with eighth-generation Advanced Power Management, make the Deskstar 5K3000 the ideal choice for energy-efficient PCs that run cooler, require less power and last longer.
SATA III InterfaceThe industry leading SATA Revision 3.0 compliant SATA ports provides up to 6Gb/s data transfer rates to reduce system bottleneck and improve performance and efficiency.
Innovation for a more sustainable environmentThe Deskstar 5K3000 demonstrates Hitachi ecological leadership with its halogen-free design and power-efficient operation. Both of these features helped qualify the drive for the Hitachi EcoTrac classification, which identifies products that minimize environmental impact in the areas of product design, manufacturing, operation and disposal.| Brand | Hitachi GST |

Pros: I really can’t comment on the 6Gb/s speed since I have this drive plugged into a 3Gb/s SATA connection. It’s being used in an unRAID Media Server and I only bought it because it was on sale and actually cheaper at the time than it’s 3Gb/s counterpart. This drive is pretty much full right now with only about 100GB of free space. It’s powered on 24/7 and is used pretty consistently. Still working after about 8 months and has passed all SMART tests to date and has had no errors when I’ve run tests.
Cons: Unfortunately due to the flooding in Thailand these drives have skyrocketed in price. Figures, just when I’ve almost filled up the entire 5TB in the server, prices go through the roof.
Overall Review: ASUS M5A78L-M LX AM3+ 760G Micro ATX Motherboard
AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz CPU
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB DDR3 1333 RAM
CORSAIR CX430 V2 430W Power Supply
COOLER MASTER HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 ATX Case
HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000 HDD
2 x HITACHI Deskstar 3TB HDD
Pros: Still a lot of storage for the price.
Cons: See below. None when used for their designed purpose.
Overall Review: Update to previous review. Hitachi customer support confirms that their utility software – DFT does not recognize 5k3000 and 5k7000 series drives as Hitachi products (in order to do a low level format)- they will work to resolve this- no release date. Other free/non-free tools that do this function exist – so not a con. Noticed these drives on FreeNAS7 get occasional DMA timeouts when in software RAID1 but function flawlessly when not in RAID. Don’t know if this is drive/bios/or controller card. Suspect it is drives since tried a few cards and MB’s. If NAS RAID is your desired purpose, check that this drive is on your compatability list. Enterprise level drives are usually better for this.
Pros: Big and Fast. 3yr warranty is virtually unheard of.
Cons: After 1 year of light use one of the 2 I purchased died.
Overall Review: RMA process was smooth, about 2 week turnaround, return shipping is buyers cost.
Pros: I bought those drives (2) on 7/29/2011 at a $59 (after $10 MIR) a piece!!! what happened that now they are sold at $119 on promo!!??
good drives, runs very cool, fast and quiet! great bang for the buck!
Cons: they have an annoying spin down feature when not used for a few hours. later upon first access there is a few second wait time until it spins up.
Pros: I have a total of five of these now. They run cool (compared to the 7200 RPM) and are fast (for large files). Not bad even as a system drive.
Cons: Bought the last two on 8/28/2011, and one was DOA.
Overall Review: NewEgg RMA process is painless, but cost me $10 for return shipping. Replacement drive is working well.
Pros: Worked right out of the box. Great price for the size. Hooked up to my Asus Sabertooth x58 motherboard with SATA 6.0 Gb/s support.
HD Tune Pro 4.60 benchmark results:
Read:
Transfer rate: Min: 61.7 MB/s, Max: 143.2 MB/s, Avg.: 107.6 MB/s
Access time: 19.8 ms
Burst rate: 204.2 MB/s
Took about 25 minutes to write 125GB of data to the drive from another HDD. Looked to be about 75-80 MB/s as an average speed.
Cons: Came as a bare drive in a plain white box even though the packaging was supposed to be “retail” according to the description. No SATA cable included. Good thing I had an extra one laying around.
Overall Review: If you’re wondering what the CoolSpin means in terms of rpm, according to HD Tune the rotation speed is 5940 RPM.
Pros: Nice drive … fast, quiet, no problems. Very cost effective purchase — Great capacity/$ value.
Cons: All print on the label are in exactly the same font, size and color. It would be nice if the capacity and model# were in a larger font and/or in bold print so they could be more easily found on the label amongst all the other printing.
Overall Review: I did a quick benchmark using HDTune to compare the high capacity drives I’ve recently purchased. All tests were done using the same SATA-II 3.0 interface under same conditions:
(Burst / Average / Access)
Hitachi 2TB 5K3000 213 / 109 / 15.8
Samsung 2TB HD204UI 170 / 105 / 14.1
WD 1.0TB 10EALS (blue) 150 / 107 / 12.8
WD 1.5TB 15EARS (green) 156 / 68 / 14.0
WD 1.0TB 10EARS (green) 148 / 82 / 14.6

Pros: Works fine. Win 7 64x finds it and formats it without a hitch.
Cons: “green” drive. ie most suitable for storage, but I knew this when I bought.
Overall Review: I use it for storage of media files. Plenty of room. Quite happy so far.
