Description
As data center professionals across the globe work to meet growing enterprise needs, they face the dilemma of storing more data in the same footprint while also reducing power and HVAC consumption. The new Ultrastar A7K2000 provides twice the data storage capacity of the prior generation Ultrastar A7K1000 drive, and does so using fewer watts. It is now possible to achieve a colossal 1.2 petabytes (PB) in the footprint of a standard 19-inch enterprise storage rack by deploying the 2TB A7K2000 in a stack of ten 4U, 60-bay enclosures.

Pros: NONE!!!
Cons: The first hard drive was dead out of the box as was the replacement drive they sent. This time I had PC pro check the hard drive out it was dead. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!

Cons: Purchased 5 of these drives for NAS. 2 were dead on arrival. 2 died within one week. For a premium drives this is unacceptable.

Pros: 2TB, can be used as paperweights.
Cons: 3 out of 4 are DOA.
Overall Review: Got 4 of these for a NAS server. 3 out of 4 are completely non functional in the server and my desktops.
Pros: – People say it’s reliable
Cons: Didn’t open the bag. Bought it for its five-year warranty. But, the drive NewEgg shipped had a mfr date of Feb-2011. They shipped a drive one year out of warranty.
NewEgg was great, though, and is taking it back.
Pros: Received quickly although an international shipment.
Cons: My only concern when I received the drive was that it was old inventory, the manufacturing date was about 2005-10, I can’t remember exactly. However, I do have confidence in HGST drives generally so it’s not a bid deal and I don’t know that it would have influenced my decision to buy it if I’d known in advance. Perhaps I might have expected a lower price.
Pros: 7200 rpm in this drive translates to good burst speeds. In a system surrounded by SSDs this HDD holds it’s own. In the past, I’ve had 7200 rpm HDDs which struggled with SSDs and I’ve seen reads all the way down to 30MBps. On this drive I don’t get below ~75MBps and it bursts often.
Cons: Loud. Very Loud. I can’t stress enough how loud it is. When I built my system, I went for quiet. Not, “I’m going to pay $400 extra to seal my system up and pad everything” quiet, no – just $120 quiet case, a quiet CPU fan and case fans that don’t sound like jet engines. It was a success and generally all you ever heard inside my PC is a “whoosh”, like a slight wind blowing and of course, at times some barely audible noises from the Seagate LP 2TB I was using (which is now failing short DST and why I installed this guy). Well…now I can very clearly hear the thing inside my case. In the end, if you want a quiet system, look elsewhere. I’m keeping it for now but as soon as I buy another I’m slapping them into my NAS and using something else in my PC.
For the record, I want my PC to be quiet because I sometimes watch stuff on it and I like to really get into shows – no distractions. “Engine noise” and tick tocks from the inside of PCs are definitely a distraction and unfortunately these noises go right through the music and vocals of whatever’s being watched.
Overall Review: Awesome drive so far but time will tell. I’ve had 2 HGST drives which have lasted me well over 5 years so far. Pretty much all my Seagate drives die in year 3 or 4 and the one I had in my PC is the first to have lasted 5 years. I have a good feeling about this HGST Enterprise drive, but I’ve not used one before so I’m really just betting on the brand. Also have no idea what processes etc. have changed since HGST went to WD so I’m just crossing my fingers.
It’s definitely not geared at home use. There’s really no consideration given to make it quiet. Obviously, it’s meant for server use where the sound of a thousand fans drown out all the ticks. I’d really only recommend it in a PC if you don’t care about noise at all or your environment on a whole is noisy anyway. If you’re putting it in a NAS, same deal. Make sure your NAS isn’t on your desk or anything or it may end up bothering you. I plan to buy another to RAID 1 in my NAS.

Overall Review: Perfect solution when my WD drive failed. Dropped it in and it was recognized instantly. The NAS rebuilt with no issues.

Cons: 2 out of 10 are bad drives. 1 was DOA and a second died within two hours. First five installed in a Synology DS1010 are working great Knock on wood! The second array makes me sad.
Overall Review: Newegg treats its customers right and is swapping out the bad drives. This is for mission critical content storage and I hope that these stand the test of time
