Comments: I’ve seen a number of hard-drives in my time, and even had a few fail on me, usually with some bad sectors or a SMART warning or something where you still have a chance to coax you most valuable data off before returning it. Not the case with this drive. It worked fine for 4 months then one day I rebooted and poof!! – not even detected by bios or the special tools from the Hitatchi website. And I had no backups because I had become complacent dealing with other drives. There is a bright side… if it fails in your first month, NewEgg will get a replacement too you a lot fast than Hitatchi does!

Comments: I’ve been using the 40 gig OEM version of this same drive in my xxxxxxxxxx 400sc servers in combination with these without any problems. xxxxx is selling nothing but Hitachi drives in their IDE equipped server products for a reason – these are fast, reliable hard drives without the failure issues of their IBM relatives. These are a new version of the drive so it’s not fair to lump the IBM reviews of old on top of this new Hitachi model.

Comments: Although I cannot speak for this drive since it is supposedly a “NEW” model, I would say that I am very disappointed with their previous model. I have NEVER had a drive fail that I was still using. My IBM 80 gig gave up the ghost without so much as minimal cry for help nothing from SMART. One day I was using it the next day NOTHING Bios wouldnt detect it & it wouldnt even spin up. I would be very cautious in buying this series of drive again. Will RMA & see what happens but some data is lost forever. And as for the people with the Fan fetish I had a HUGE Fan blowing directly on the drive & I checked the internal drive temp occasionally & it was never in the danger zone. Drive was very Fast and Quiet Loved that, Hated losing my stuff ;(

If you really think about how fast hard drives are constantly spinning and how important your data is, you’d never operate another one without active cooling!

I have two of the infamous 40gb IBM drives (no longer available) in a raid 0 configuration. I love these drives and I have never had the slightest reason to doubt them! I invested a few extra bucks and have kept them cool every operating second of their lives and in return, they have stayed extremely quiet, extremely fast and completely reliable for nearly two and a half years.

I read some research findings regarding my “suspect drives” several months ago and the findings showed zero failure rates so long as they were operated with fans, but you guessed it, high failure rates if they were not!

I bought them because of a review I read showed their performance was totally untouchable by any other manufacturer; so I figured they belonged in a raid 0 configuration.

Just use some common sense and get you a fan no matter what hard drive you purchase! We all know everything in the case requires a fan for best performance anyway!

Comments: I purchased this drive about 6 months ago and it has started clicking, beeping and giving me errors on the smart monitoring software, I am currently backing up important data and sourcing a decent replacement. I do not recommend this drive to anyone, the GXP series have a high failure rating and IBM will not admit there is a problem. I will never buy another IBM branded product again.

Comments: Despite the other reviews, I’ve had a great experience with this drive. It’s fast, and extremely quiet.

I did a lot of research when I bought this back in March (for $93, @ $74 now), and saw nothing but good reviews. Certainly no data to support the previous poster that stated IBM-Hitachis have the highest failure rate.

80G for $74 is hard to argue with either way, given NewEgg’s awesome RMA process.

Comments: I used to swear by IBM drives and recommend them to everyone…but no longer. I’ve owned (1) 75GXP 45GB, (2) 60GXP 40GB, (1) 120GXP 40GB, and (1) 180GXP 120GB, so I have some personal experience with their line of drives over the past couple of years. The performance is always great (usually best of class or real close), but over time most of these drives developed issues of one type or another…clicking noises, whirring, and a couple of them even died outright with no warning whatsoever. It’s possible I’ve just had a bad run of luck with IBM drives, but I seriously doubt it, especially considering how many problems have been reported by other people. There must be some type of major design/engineering defect which is causing so many drives to fail. During the same time period I’ve had a couple Seagates, (3) Western Digital SE units, and a Maxtor and none of them have had a single problem. Bottom line: great performance, bad reliability. I don’t think I’ll be investing in any more IBM/Hitachi drives in the near future, if ever again. Caveat emptor.
